Hear It See It

…Mungkin momen yang tak terjadi pada setiap orang bisa mengenal musik Rock semenjak usia 8.
Dan lagi, yang dikenal adalah grup macam Alice Cooper, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, dll seangkatannya di tahun 1978.
Itu karena Oom saya yang nge-Rock abis dimana kita tinggal di Bandung.
Lagunya, cover kaset dan LPnya plus majalah Aktuil yang jadul itu ada di sana.

Ya, di ujung jalan deket rumah disitulah bangsanya Deddy Stanzah, Gito Rollies kongkow kongkow sama si Oom.
Thanks ya Oom, Rocknya demikian berkesan sampai sekarang walau gak jaminan lebih tau banyak dari yang baru suka…

Selebihnya, perjalanan mengenal Rock mulai lewat konser di Jakarta masa SMP-SMA jamannya Acid Speed Band, Cockpit, dsb.
Selera juga mulai bergeser dari apa yang disebut Hard Rock ke Classic atau Art rock dan belakangan Progressive Rock.
Gak tau ya… Barangkali frekuensinya buat kerja kreatif tuning sekali!

Di bawah ini, walau tidak secara timeline, adalah yang pernah menggurat waktu dan beberapa still OK buat bikin suasana khusus.

Sekali lagi lagu-lagu Rock saat itu memang surealis dan itu erat hubungannya dengan penggambaran ‘art’nya di cover.
Story-nya bukan hanya digambarkan dalam desain tapi lagu-personalitas group dan gaya covernya seperti dua kutub seni yang saling mengimbangi dan memperkaya.
Banyak lagu yang berkesan tapi digitalnya tak dapat dijumpai dan, maaf, referensi saya dominan below 2002 saja agar ada sense of jadul-nya.
(Hanya seorang Dethu yang bisa membuat hal personal ini terdengar untuk umum)

1. Heart of Stone – The Rolling Stones
Dramatik ballad dengan bungkusan blues dan R&B ini sangat berkesan buat para green activist.
Kisah tentang logo kondang Lips & Tongue karya John Pasche ini dibuatnya sewaktu dia masih mahasiswa desain dan hanya dihargai sekitar 80 pound. Ternyata logo itu cocok banget dan dipakai hingga saat ini. Sketsa desain awal desain itu laku 92.500 US$ dan kini menjadi koleksi the Victoria and Albert Museum

Lagu ini menjadi momen baru bagi LZ dalam urusan mengemasnya di dapur rekaman. …For me, Rock n’ Roll is not so much a phenomenon about sex and illicit
substances; its always been more about the frequent playing of an air guitar –
dancing, heartrending, and pretending the larger-than-life strumming, plucking
and picking motions of an imaginary rock-style electric guitar….

...Yet again, for me, the fanciful mental image to sex someone up and
occasional experimenting of drugs is more a reality of (my) daily life…

Vai truly embodies what I call “ a virtuoso of anything with strings.” I mean he has really come along way from the boy who visited Joe “Satch” Satriani with a pack of strings on his left hand and a guitar on his right hand; saying “when I grow up, I wanna be a famous rock n roll guitar player…”

2. Middle Man – Living Colour
Vernon Reid, guitarist of unnerving-unconventional “funky-chunky” rhythms and vigorous italic sounding melodies is the mastermind of this New York based band. Their debut album Vivid really augmented the band’s personal quintessence to the themes of political marginality and darker yet sublime subculture of rock in black communities. Living Colour is truly the pioneers of black-funk-metal.

3. Cupid’s Dead – Extreme
I praise this album dearly. By far, it’s the band’s most ambitious album and also the best. The concept of interchanging yet interrelated sections of the album: You-Mine-The Truth makes you set repeat on the dial. It’s a journey about denial, anger, pacification, sorrow, and enlightenment at once. Soak yourself wet into the never-ending funk-metal guitar riffs!

One of the definitive vocalists of the Grunge movement, Chris Cornell’s range and ability to tear bricks out of walls with his high-pitched scream is a trademark sound that many have tried to emulate—and many have failed. This track from the album Badmotorfinger solidified Soundgarden as a serious force and hailed Chris as vocal legend. To avoid destroying this opinion, do not listen to his latest solo album release (EVER!)

The mighty sound of Kurt Cobain’s voice struck the right note with youth across the world. 1. Maret 1989 – God Bless
Salman Rushdie menjadi aktor intelektual dalam lirik lagu ini. Kisah tentang Muhammad dalam wacana hiperealitas dalam teks berjudul Satanic Verses yang membuat darah si pengarangnya dihalalkan oleh Khomeini. Saat ini Salman Rushdie berubah menjadi selebritis, bahkan membuat film dan lagu bersama Bono & Wim Wenders di Million Dollar Hotel.

2. Ikuti – Edane
Edane awalnya adalah Eet Syahrani dan Eq Soekarno. Entah kenapa tiba-tiba berubah menjadi Eet Syahrani & Eki Lamoh. Komposisi rock yang menggabungkan elemen Van Halen & AC/DC dengan sound yang begitu gemuk dan berat. Masih menjadi komposisi paling agung dari Edane.

3. Rock Bergema – Roxx

Underrated hardcore band. Pertama mendengar band ini dari kompilasi Noise Forest: Thrasher Skate Rock Volume 7 yang dikompilasi oleh Pushead. Menjadi soundtrack hari-hari bermain skate saya, walaupun akhirnya sisi musik jauh lebih menempel dibanding sisi skating-nya. Raw, harsh, dan to the point.
