I first discovered the “female Bowie” St. Vincent through a friend who was involved in the production of the music video for “Who,” in which St. Vincent collaborated with David Byrne for their duet album Love This Giant back in 2012. I’m ecstatic that St. Vincent is finally coming to town. Thank you Joyland Fest for bringing her to Jakarta!

Here’s “Masseduction” from her 2017 album with the same title, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200, becoming her first top ten album in the United States. Masseduction was widely praised and was the fourth-most mentioned in critics’ year-end lists for 2017. At the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Masseduction won the award for Best Recording Package and Best Rock Song for its title track and was also nominated for the Best Alternative Music Album.

St. Vincent’s fifth studio album, Masseduction.

St. Vincent has stated that the album focuses on themes of power, sex, drugs, sadness, imperiled relationships, and death. “Masseduction is pretty first person. You can’t fact-check it, but if you want to know about my life, listen to this record.”

Drowned in Sound said, “You wouldn’t want one track or note to be changed or left out. It’s a genuine masterpiece: complex, funny, sexy, bleak, uplifting, inspiring, and enthralling from start to finish.” While Allmusic stated, “Masseduction delivers sketches of chaos with stunning clarity. It’s the work of an always savvy artist at her wittiest and saddest.”

See you on Friday at Joyland!

Music journalist, writer, radio DJ, socio-political activist, creative industry leader, and a qualified librarian, Rudolf Dethu is heavily under the influence of the punk rock philosophy. Often tagged as this country’s version of Malcolm McLaren—or as Rolling Stone Indonesia put it ‘the grand master of music propaganda’—a name based on his successes when managing Bali’s two favourite bands, Superman Is Dead and Navicula, both who have become two of the nation’s biggest rock bands.
