¡Feliz aniversario Sandinista!

Pula menunjukkan evolusi The Clash menjadi grup musik yang kental nuansa sosial politik.

Sebagaimana London Calling, Sandinista! turut termaktub di jajaran prestisius 500 Greatest Albums of All Time versi majalah Rolling Stone.

Tembang “Police on My Back” merupakan salah satu paling favorit dari semua terbitan The Clash.

Pun saya—thanks to internet, so-called information super highway—baru tahu bahwa sejatinya “Police on My Back” adalah karya biduan reggae pop Eddy Grant dan dibawakannya kala bergabung di grup The Equals. Posisi vokalis di “Police on My Back” versi The Clash bukan diemban oleh Joe Strummer tapi Mick Jones.

Versi asli “Police on My Back” saya sertakan juga di sini agar ada perbandingan. Dan jika bicara selera, saya lebih suka versi The Clash. Nuansa “gawat”, rasa Sandinista-nya amat menonjol.

Well, I’m running, police on my back!

Music journalist, writer, radio DJ, socio-political activist, creative industry leader, and a qualified librarian, Rudolf Dethu is heavily under the influence of the punk rock philosophy. Often tagged as this country’s version of Malcolm McLaren—or as Rolling Stone Indonesia put it ‘the grand master of music propaganda’—a name based on his successes when managing Bali’s two favourite bands, Superman Is Dead and Navicula, both who have become two of the nation’s biggest rock bands.
