Rest in peace, Pete Shelley.

The singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of Buzzcocks passed away—he’s 63—last week on Dec 6 n Estonia where he was living.

“Pete Shelley is one of the UK’s most influential and prolific songwriters and co-founder of the seminal original punk band Buzzcocks,” the band said on Thursday evening.

I was introduced to Buzzcocks via “Orgasm Addict” and played it a lot (together with “What Do I Get”, “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldnt’ve)”, and “Fiction Romance”) in my radio show in the late 90s.

In Indonesia they weren’t as popular in the punk rock scene as the Sex Pistols back then. The main reason, I think, was more because their albums weren’t available here.

The song/video, “Everybody Happy Nowadays”, is from Buzzcocks’ own compilation album, Singles Going Steady. Released in 1979, this was their introduction for the American public.

Rudolf Dethu

Music journalist, writer, radio DJ, socio-political activist, creative industry leader, and a qualified librarian, Rudolf Dethu is heavily under the influence of the punk rock philosophy. Often tagged as this country’s version of Malcolm McLaren—or as Rolling Stone Indonesia put it ‘the grand master of music propaganda’—a name based on his successes when managing Bali’s two favourite bands, Superman Is Dead and Navicula, both who have become two of the nation’s biggest rock bands.
