41 years ago today, disco was killed by a public backlash with the infamous Disco Demolition Night at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. At least 9 were injured and 39 got arrested.

RAINBOW FLAG: THE STORY BEHIND
⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣The rainbow flag was created in 1978 by artist, designer, Vietnam War veteran and then-drag performer, Gilbert Baker. He was commissioned to create a flag by another gay icon, politician Harvey Milk, for San Francisco’s annual pride parade.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣The decision to enlist Baker proved serendipitous, as the idea of a flag to represent the gay and lesbian community had occurred to him two years earlier. As Baker told the Museum of Modern Art during a 2015 interview, he had been inspired by the celebrations marking America’s bicentennial in 1976, noting that the constant display of stars and stripes made him realise the cultural need for a similar rallying sign for the gay community. At the time, the most commonly used image for the burgeoning gay rights movement was the pink triangle, a symbol used by the Nazis to identify homosexuals.⁣⁣

⁣⁣Using a symbol with such a dark and painful past was never an option for Baker. He instead opted to use a rainbow as his inspiration. The different colours within the flag were meant to represent togetherness, since LGBT people come in all races, ages, and genders, and rainbows are both natural and beautiful. The original flag featured eight colours, each having a different meaning. At the top was hot pink, which represented sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow signifying sunlight, green for nature, turquoise to represent art, indigo for harmony, and finally violet at the bottom for spirit.⁣⁣

⁣⁣With the help of close to 30 volunteers working in the attic of the Gay Community Center in San Francisco, Baker was able to construct the first draft of the now world-renowned rainbow flag. It was first showcased at San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978.⁣⁣

CHAOS TO COUTURE: SAFETY PIN, PADLOCK, PUNK ROCK

Early punk fashion was defiantly anti-materialistic and initially handmade, trying to stay true to egalitarianism ideology. That's why accessories like gold necklaces or silver braces, they were rarely seen in the punk scene. Items that were easily found around us, part of our everyday life, those were used more as accessories in punk fashion. Especially these two: padlocks and safety pins. They have become the integral parts of punk fashion.

The bass player of Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, often seen wearing padlock necklace. While Johnny Rotten, the singer, he used many safety pins as important components of his outfit.

Safety pins became associated with punk (in the UK) in the late 1970s. Some claim the look was taken originally from Richard Hell whom the British punks saw in pictures, and whose style they adopted. This is disputed by a number of artists from the first wave of British punk, most notably Johnny Rotten, who insists that safety pins were originally incorporated for more practical reasons, for example, to remedy "the arse of your pants falling out".

Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren played significant roles in punk fashion via their boutique back then at 430 King's Road, London, SEX. Mainstream punk style was influenced by clothes sold in SEX. Glen Matlock and Sid Vicious, both bassists of Sex Pistols, respectively, used to work at SEX.

These days, punk fashion has been commercialised, and well-established fashion designers—such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons, Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang, Ann Demeulemeester, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Sui, and several more—have used punk elements in their production. Punk apparently has invaded Paris/Milan/London/New York Fashion Week's catwalks. In Indonesia, the infamous clothing label Suicide Glam pretty much having similar spirit with SEX: angsty and subversive.

In spring 2013, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held an exhibition with a specific theme: punk fashion, examines punk's impact on high fashion and culture in general.

Looking stylish as hell never hurts though, especially when your enemy is omnipotent state control. In those years, Eastern Bloc countries were thirsty for the fractured, rage-ridden themes of English and American bands like the Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys. In those foreign screams, young Hungarians understood an echo of their own frustrations, and a dark reassurance that even life in the democratic West was as despondent as the situation at home. And in a political climate where having fun and playing music with your friends can earn you a jail sentence, innocuous activities quickly become subversive statements. Prolific photojournalist Tamás Urbán was in his mid 30s when he started documenting the punk scene in Budapest, but he was no newcomer to the underground. A staffer at Ifjúsági Magazin (Youth Magazine) since 1969, Urbán was the rare press photographer at the time who wasn’t restricted from covering some of the darker corners of Hungary’s so-called socialist utopia. From glue sniffers and juvenile prisons to crime scenes and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Urbán’s work was a clear critique of the socialist system. Not that everything he shot was published—most of these pictures weren’t seen until the 1990s. At the time, anti-establishment punks were facing serious harassment by police. In 1982, the members of punk band CPg were tried and convicted of “political agitation” for their openly anti-communist lyrics and famously violent performances—seen as an assault on state authority. Most of the band served two years in jail for the offense. Urbán’s photos expose his comfort with young people at the periphery of society.
