On this date in 1976, certain employees at EMI pressing plants refused to handle the Sex Pistols’ single “Anarchy in the U.K” due to the provocative name of the group, the language in the song’s lyrics and the band’s general sentiment. On 6 January 1977 EMI dropped the Sex Pistols.

Some people thought—prematurely concluded—the New York sharpest-dressed miserablists, Interpol, would collapse after the charismatic bassist Carlos Dengler left the band. But after watching them in Singapore last year, trio formation, without Carlos, I am definitely convinced: no one is irreplaceable.

Today, 52 years ago, Rolling Stone made their debut. The price was 25 cents and it had a free roach clip to hold a marijuana joint. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards weren’t too happy that there was a newspaper using their name and not even put them on the cover of the first issue.

COMING UP ROSES: LIES

Just discovered this Singapore’s magnificent shoegaze unit, Coming Up Roses. Saw them performing at Hard Rock Cafe Singapore a few nights ago, falling in love instantly. Been listening to this song on repeat. Melancholy and atmospheric yet beautiful. Sad and gorgeous vocal style. Shoegaze at its best.
