EVOLUSI ROCKABALI: VEGAS DULU, UBUD KEMUDIAN

Rockabali—lakuran dari "Rockabilly" dan "Bali"—yang tadinya melulu mengkhusus pada sub kultur Rockabilly, pomade boogie, dan pompadour 'n' roll di Bali, kini maknanya telah berekspansi. Melebar menuju arus utama juga merangkul genre musik berbeda, berevolusi menjadi sebentuk budaya baru.

Rockabali merupakan lakuran (portmanteau) yang bersumber dari penggabungan dua kata yaitu “rockabilly” dan “Bali”. Tadinya bermakna semata tentang skena musik rockabilly di Bali, cenderung agak teknis, namun kini telah berkembang luas.

Istilah Rockabali pertama kali terlacak tersiar ke khalayak pada tahun 2006. Saat itu majalah (almarhum) Playboy Indonesia mengulas tentang rockabilly yang sedang menggejala di Indonesia dan justru paling mewabah di Bali. Walau baru lahir pada 2004, pamor The Hydrant di masa itu sedang moncer sekali.

Genre musik yang disodorkan relatif berbeda, mengajak audiens berdandan parlente, rambut klimis tersisir rapi, irama riang mendorong orang berdansa, serta di saat yang sama memainkan musik macam rockabilly dibutuhkan kemampuan musikal mumpuni, di atas rata-rata. Majalah Playboy lalu memunculkan terminologi baru berupa lakuran Rockabali yang secara liberal bisa dimaknai skena nan khas di Bali dengan fondasi utama rockabilly.
