Natalie Laura Mering, known professionally as Weyes Blood, was just awarded by SPIN magazine with a prestigious status: Artist of the Year.

When asked what being named SPIN’s 2022 Artist of the Year means to her: “It makes me think I should keep going,” she laughs. “I won’t stop!”

Mering’s music has undergone significant changes throughout her career. She has been involved in the underground noise music scene, was briefly the bassist of the Portland-based group Jackie-O Motherfucker and was a singer for the band Satanized. As Weyes Blood, she released five studio albums. Her fourth, Titanic Rising (2019), on Sub Pop, made Weyes Blood a household name.

Much of Weyes Blood’s sound and vibe is rooted in ’70s folk-pop traditions, with mystical themes of rambling on to find meaning and purpose. Mering’s flawless voice recalls Karen Carpenter (though Mering says she doesn’t care much about The Carpenters) and her melodies and progression channel Joni Mitchell as much as Harry Nilsson.

The music video here via 90.7 WFUV, Weyes Blood performing “Andromeda”, Titanic Rising‘s first single. So hauntingly beautiful. A perfect soundtrack for a lazy Sunday. Weyes Blood, I’m your new fan!

Music journalist, writer, radio DJ, socio-political activist, creative industry leader, and a qualified librarian, Rudolf Dethu is heavily under the influence of the punk rock philosophy. Often tagged as this country’s version of Malcolm McLaren—or as Rolling Stone Indonesia put it ‘the grand master of music propaganda’—a name based on his successes when managing Bali’s two favourite bands, Superman Is Dead and Navicula, both who have become two of the nation’s biggest rock bands.
