Domestic Groove: ABIMANA

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb’s Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it’s an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia’s public figures are really into, musically speaking. For the 21st edition I went upclose-and-personal with Abimana.

For the 21st edition I went upclose-and-personal with Abimana.

ABIMANA
Actor, Musician

What song are you into at the moment?
30 Seconds to Mars, “Kings and Queens”.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
Nirvana Nevermind. It made me wanna be a rockstar.

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?
Jimi Hendrix’s First Rays of the New Rising Sun, Nirvana’s Nevermind,
and The Best of Doors. Those albums represent legacies that should be appreciated by keeping the spirit alive and continuing the struggle.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
I think I have none. Each album makes its own impression. There’s no such thing as “bad”.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, the next time you reincarnate?
I would be anyone as long as I’m still a human being (laughs). It would be good if I was me again, so I could fix all the mistakes I’ve made.

What music do you choose to start your weekend?
These days I’m hooked on this NOFX song, “Kill All the White Man”. Fat Mike rocks! (laughs)

And music you choose to end your weekend?
I’m in love with Hayley Williams of Paramore. Also much inspired by Eminem. I guess I would listen to “Not Afraid” as I get ready for weekdays…
“…I’m not afraid to take a stand…”

Abimana is busy promoting his current film, Catatan Harian Si Boy. His next movie project, Dilema, is currently in production. He also continues to pursue his musical dreams by demos to record labels.

Music journalist, writer, radio DJ, socio-political activist, creative industry leader, and a qualified librarian, Rudolf Dethu is heavily under the influence of the punk rock philosophy. Often tagged as this country’s version of Malcolm McLaren—or as Rolling Stone Indonesia put it ‘the grand master of music propaganda’—a name based on his successes when managing Bali’s two favourite bands, Superman Is Dead and Navicula, both who have become two of the nation’s biggest rock bands.
