Domestic Groove: MAYLAFFAYZA

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb's Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it's an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia's public figures are really into, musically speaking. For the fifth edition I went upclose-and-personal with Maylaffayza.

MAYLAFFAYZA
Violinist, Singer, Blogger

What music are you into at the moment?
The original soundtracks of Despicable Me, the animated movie. I love it so much! I like the groove of the songs, and I think Pharell did a great job for the soundtracks. The other songs are also funny and make me do some silly dance moves that remind me of the dance scene in the movie.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it?
I think my mother was the one that bought me my first record. It was a violin instrumental record, so it enriched my musicality as a kid who’s learning to play violin.

My 1st album that I bought (maybe) was Michael Jackson’s album. He literally changed my life, especially with the song “Man In the Mirror”. I always remember what he said in it: “if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change”. I carry his words in my heart, in everything I do.

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?
Hmm… this is a really tough question… it’s hard to choose. I would say Usher, the album Confessions is one of my favourites. One of my favourite Usher’s song is “Burn”, I think the song always reminds of the time when I struggled in my life, in many ways, but at the same time keeping my passion alive.

I have tons of favourite albums from Kaskade, Alicia Keys, The Ting Tings, Susan Boyle, Sex and The City soundtracks, India.Arie, Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, to Boyz II Men and Michael Bublé.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
I haven’t [smile]

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
Tough question… never really thought about it. But come to think of it, maybe a monk.
Living in the monastry, in Plum Village in Paris. Travelling the world, giving retreats and lectures, spreading knowledge of living mindfully, knowledge of peace, love and compassion. A monk that writes spiritual book, that touches the heart of the whole world’s citizen.

What song do you choose to start your weekend?
“World’s Greatest” by R. Kelly. It motivates me to push my boundaries. Or something from the album of Kaskade, his rhythm gets me going.

And album you choose to end your weekend?
Either Chris Botti’s album, Italia—it’s very soothing. Or India.Arie’s Love and Politics.
