46 years ago today, Kate Bush released her debut studio album The Kick Inside, which contained her UK number one hit, “Wuthering Heights”, (marking the first time a female singer-songwriter topped the charts with a self-penned song). Bush was just 19 years old and had written some of the songs when she was only 13.
Bush wrote “Wuthering Heights” aged 18, she was inspired after seeing the 1967 BBC adaptation of the 1847 novel Wuthering Heights. She then read the book and discovered that she shared her birthday with author Emily Brontë.
The video below, taken last year in Folkstone, Kent, south-east England. It shows The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever, an event held at locations around the world where participants recreate the music video of “Wuthering Heights”. The event’s inspiration is Shambush’s The Ultimate Kate Bush Experience, which took place in 2013 in Brighton, United Kingdom, as part of Brighton Fringe, created by performance collective Shambush! who attempted to set an unofficial world record for the most people dressed as Kate Bush in one place, with hundreds attending.
In 2016, The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever event held in at least 16 places worldwide including Adelaide, Perth, Northern Rivers, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Atlanta, Copenhagen, Berlin, Uppsala, Wellington, Hobart, Amsterdam and Somersworth.
Last year, The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever was celebrated in more than 13 cities around the globe.
